Ian is a right handed fast bowler who rose to fame in the 2004-05 season, when he took 20 wickets at 26.55 in the State District Championships. The Kiwi selectors then blooded him almost instantaneously against the touring Australians, but he failed to impress at the two games he played. He, then, made a comeback in 2006-07 season against the South Africans and has played six Tests in all, taking just 12 wickets. He has also played just the one ODI when he made his debut against England earlier in 2008.

Regular injuries to the New Zealand fast bowlers has drafted him into the frame of the selectors time & again, and his latest recall to the national squad has come on the back of some pretty impressive stuff in domestic cricket, where he took 34 wickets at an impressive average of 20.85.
